If you live in the UK and you get your potatoes from the company Greenvale, then they could soon be produced using wind power.

The UK's Triodos Renewables have signed a deal with Greenvale to power its site with one 1.5 megawatt (MW) wind turbine at the company's Floods Ferry site in Cambridgeshire. The wind turbine will produce enough clean electricity to the equivalent of the annual electricity usage of a 1,000 households. The wind turbine will be constructed and developed by the on-site generation specialist Wind Direct.

Operations director of Greenvale, Trevor Dear said: "The wind turbine will secure a reliable energy supply for our packing site, generate jobs within the region, and reduce our impact on the environment. This is a key part of our environmental policy which aims to reduce our CO2 output by 20 per cent by 2015."

Managing director of Triodos Renewables, Matthew Clayton followed up stating: "We are delighted to be working with Greenvale and to be building on their commitment to renewable energy. The sustainable ethos of Greenvale has made our collaboration on this project a very positive experience."

Mr. Clayton further said that this had been a great start on 2014 for Triodos Renewables, following up on the record year of 2013 for the company and UK's renewable energy industry as a whole. Last year 14.8% of UK's electricity was provided by renewables and with new capacity having been added and scheduled to be added in 2014, that number is set to be topped this year.

The construction of the wind turbine, which is 100 metres tall, is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year and will be able to power up to 60% of Greenvale's potato packaging facility.
