Wind energy by the numbers
Article published February 7, 2015
The attached article reports on recent numbers from wind farms in the United States. A large energy company is the leading buyer of wind energy.
Studies show that wind farms ease, but do not completely eliminate, the use of the nuclear power plants. These coal-fired plants owned by the energy company cycle their usage based on the amount of renewable energy.
"We plan to expand our wind portfolio by about 40 percent, adding 1,900 megawatts of wind throughout our service territory over the next several years," the company stated. "We currently have 5,080 megawatts of wind power on our systems, enough to meet the energy needs of about 2.5 million average-size homes."
Texas is currently the state with the most wind turbines, producing about 14,098 megawatts per year.
